“The hamerkop, who was trying so hard to be still and catch a frog off guard, now had no chance with all this playful commotion. The Hamerkop bird got its name from the Afrikaans and Dutch words “hamer” (hammer) and “kop” (head), thanks to its funny, hammer-shaped head. With its unique crest and long bill, this bird looks like it’s wearing a tiny hammer on its head!

“And so, the hamerkop, instead of just flying in one direction, began circling the mud wallow. It seemed as if the dogs enjoyed this game of chase. This lasted until they got dizzy from all the running in circles. It was just the most comical scene: three wild dogs all chasing a small bird around a mud wallow.”

A leopard caught this warthog and couldn’t take it out immediately, so it started eating it right away.

While the warthog is busy calling for help, you can see its heart beating from the inside where the leopard opened up its stomach

It almost looks like the leopard is performing “open-heart surgery.” As the predator opens the warthog’s chest cavity, the heart is briefly exposed, still beating. This rare and raw moment showcases not only the power of the leopard but also its surprising accuracy in disabling its prey.

Leopards are renowned for their hunting prowess, but this scene takes it to another level. The way the leopard methodically opens the warthog, targeting vital organs, demonstrates a predator finely tuned for survival. In this case, the image of the warthog’s heart still beating, even as the leopard works through its chest, adds an almost eerie sense of nature’s brutality.

This sighting shows the harsh realities of the wild, where every meal is a matter of survival. The scene may be difficult to watch for some, but it highlights the extraordinary capabilities of one of nature’s most skilled hunters, revealing the sheer efficiency of leopards.

  • Snapdragon flowers turn into macabre human looking skulls when they die ‎

Snapdragon flowers turn into macabre human looking skulls when they die ‎

The Antirrhinum (right), commonly known as the snapdragon has been a popular garden plant for many years. Also known as the dragon flower, its common name derives from the resemblance of the flower to a dragon’s head.

When laterally squeezed the dragon will open and close it mouth: ask any grandparent whose flowers have been decimated by over keen but clumsy grandchildren. Yet once the flower has died, leaving behind the seed pod, something a little more macabre appears. The dragon – just a visual metaphor after all – appears to have a skull.

    Snapdragon pods

Little wonder, then, that ancient cultures held the snapdragon to possess supernatural powers. They were thought to offer protection from deceit, curses and witchcraft if they were planted in your garden. Another myth maintains that they are able to restore youthfulness and beauty to any woman who ate them. It’s a wonder that the witches didn’t raid the gardens in which they grew to repair their own ravaged features.

Concealing a snapdragon about the body was supposed to make a person appear gracious and fascinating. Perhaps it is for this reason that in the Victorian language of flowers, the snapdragon was designated to symbolize deception and presumption. It could also, however, be sent by a lady to show gratitude to another – perhaps as a thank you for that marvelous anti-aging potion. Let’s face it – those Charmed Ones can’t be getting any younger.

    Darfur/Sarajevo/Rwanda/etc…. Iraq?

Just how many heads are needed for a potion?

    The Body Snatchers

Under an electron microscope the snapdragon pod looks, if anything, even more supernatural.

Yet in these enlightened times the majority of people do not believe in witchcraft and sorcery – not to mention dragons. However, when presented with the seed pod of the snapdragon, the skulls of so many dragons, one might be forgiven a moment’s reconsideration…

  • Lioness Rescues Her 6 Cubs

    Lioness Rescues Her 6 Cubs

Elephants noticed lionesses with their cubs and chased them away! The mothers were able to find all but one, the cub that was left behind.

This little feel-good rescue story will definitely tug on your heartstrings….

Latestsightings.com was given the account of events by Designer, Chris Tote (39): “I had been watching two lionesses with 6 small cubs lazing about in the Sabie Riverbed for about half an hour.

In the distance, I could see two herds of elephants on either side of the river, and I thought if I wait long enough the one herd is more than likely going to walk right to where these lions are and from there, anything could happen.

Sure enough, about an hour later this herd of around twenty elephants suddenly started trumpeting and charging as soon as they realized that they were amongst lions. The two lionesses shot up the river bank and onto the road and all they could do was anxiously watch in the hopes that their cubs would be alright.

After what seemed like an age, the elephants finally moved through the area and the lionesses were able to head back down in search of the six cubs. They were scattered everywhere and it took close to half an hour before they finally emerged at the roadside. At this point there were a lot of cars around and crossing the road was a scary prospect for the cubs. One by one they plucked up the courage and made it across and into the surrounding bushveld. All but one that is.

The tiny cub cried out for its mom with all its might but there were so many cars around with engines running that there is no way she would have heard it. At some point one of the lionesses must have realized there was one cub missing and around twenty minutes later suddenly appeared in the road and ran quickly down to the river bed to find the missing cub that had now hidden away, hoping for mom to return.

Five minutes later she appeared carrying the little cub in her mouth and off they went to reunite with the rest of the pride and cubs.

    —WATCH—

It was naturally very tense knowing that the cubs were in amongst the elephants, and then expectations were high after they moved off that all would be found ok. It was amazing to see how wide an area they had each ran off to and how long it took the lionesses to find them all. A very happy scene when they all appeared from the river bed and onto the road, and then tense again when the one cub was left behind but luckily there was a very happy lioness reunited with her young babies.”

    Lion Quickly Attacks Car!

The scary moment a male lion attacks a car just after mating with a lioness! We have the full story!

The scary moment a male lion attacks a car just after mating with a lioness!

Chemical engineer (29), Mark Williams-Wynn, explained to Latestsightings.com the story that unfolded on the H12, near Skukuza, early yesterday morning.

“It had been a strange drive. I came up the H4-1 early in the morning, which is usually the best road for predator sightings at this time of the year, but on this occurrence, the only good sighting was of a herd of elephants crossing the road.

I had already planned to go back down to Lower Sabie along the H1-2 and then H12, so when I was stopped by a car to tell me to take the H12 turnoff because of some lions, I was glad that I would finally see something interesting. When I arrived, there was a lion and lioness lying in the road, and another male lying behind an anthill a bit removed from the road. Because the lions were on the road, the cars were a bit of a mess. I patiently waited my turn to get front-row parking.

People were slowly moving off and more arriving, as is usual with a lion sighting. Eventually I got close to the front. By this time, the big lion had made a few advances on the female, nuzzling her and trying to get her consent, but every time, he was rebuffed with a fierce growl from her. After the umpteenth attempt, all of a sudden, he walked away from her and started staring at the occupants of the closest car. I guess that he either decided to see if he could impress his lady with some bravado, or else he needed something to take his frustrations out of. At this point, I quickly started filming, as it looked as if something was about to happen. Luckily I started the camera rolling, as, quick as a flash, he had attacked the car and turned back to the female, as if to say, “Look how brave I am.”

There was nothing that the occupants of the vehicle had done wrong, and luckily they had their windows up, as it could have otherwise ended in disaster. They just happened to be the closest vehicle to the lion when he lost his mind. The shaken tourists in the vehicle drove off shaken but unharmed. When looking at the reaction of the driver in the video, it did not even seem as if he was that afraid. But on speaking with them afterwards, I think that they were fairly traumatised.

A quarter of an hour went past, and the crazy act of the lion was forgotten, new people arrived and everything seemed to be back to normality. Just another mating lion sighting in KNP. The female moved to the shade thrown by a safari vehicle that had parked to view the lions, and everyone was taking photos, videoing, etc, as one does at a lion sighting.

But then, once again, the lion decided to see if the female was interested, and again he was rebuffed. This time, the closest vehicle was an open top safari vehicle. Thankfully the game guide driving this vehicle had lightning reflexes. As soon as the lion locked eyes with him, he started the vehicle, and was already moving when the lion attacked. He did almost drive into another vehicle in his haste to get his guests out of harm’s way, but a miss is as good as a mile. Unfortunately I didn’t get this second attack on video. But suffice to say, the quick reflexes of the game guide prevented disaster. All of the occupants of this second vehicle were ashen-faced after this close encounter.

This was probably the scariest thing that I have experienced in all of my holidays in the bush. The lion was just so unpredictable. I was not sure what he was going to do next. After the second attack, everyone gave the lion a wide berth. Even the female appeared to be abashed of what her consort had done. After a while of them lying in the shade I drove off to see what else I could find.

    WATCH

Mating lions on the road are fairly common. I’ve seen at least one pair every time that I come to the park. A lion attacking and hitting a car – I’ve never seen such a thing, and am glad that I managed to document it. It was good that the tourists had their windows up. It shows how dangerous putting any part of your body out of the window at a sighting is. Although I do not advocate having to drive around the park with windows up, this video definitely makes a strong case for doing so at a lion sighting, especially when they are right next to you. I also want to stress that the tourists did absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, no-one was hurt, simply because they followed all of the rules and did not panic.

  • The Moment 20 Lions All Drink in Perfect Unison

The Moment 20 Lions All Drink in Perfect Unison

This is the magical moment a pride of 20 lions lined up one by one next to each other, to have a drink from the Sabie River

Bernhard Bekker, from Private Kruger Safaris, told LatestSightings.com the story:

“We saw the lions the previous evening late on 15 Aug 2017 on the banks of the Sabie River about 4km from Lower Sabie towards Skukuza Camp in the Kruger National Park just lying on the sand in the river and they did not look like they wanted to go anywhere soon.

So we decided to call it a day and return to camp. The next morning we rushed to get to the spot where we last saw them and there was no sign of the lions I was quite disappointed and so were our guests on the vehicle.

Then we decided to go up the river and start our day looking for Leopard about a half an hour later we returned towards the Lower Sabie camp and suddenly out of nowhere we saw the lions appearing on the “beach” out of the reeds and I saw 1 female heading towards the water immediately I had a thought that they might drink but did not for one moment think that this sighting might turn out the way it did.

And then the magic happened one by one these lions came down to the water and filled in the gaps next to each other as they came in I counted them and 19 appeared then at the last moment before the first lioness raised her head the last baby to make the count a full 20 appeared and started to drink. WOW, what an amazing moment on safari one to remember in 18 years I have not seen that ever a whole pride drinking like this in full frontal view was unbelievable.

Our guest and I left the sighting in awe and were speechless all the way back to the camp.

This will become a pride to be reckoned with in the Lower Sabie area of Kruger National Park, South Africa they also have 5 large males that is the dominant coalition so a sound and solid foundation is laid for all these clubs to secure their survival I will be following them for sure.”

Apparently, Dracula Parrots Are A Thing And They Might Be The Most Gothic Birds On Earth

When we think of parrots, we usually imagine them as green, red, or blue-colored birds. However, the types of parrots are a lot more diverse than you might think. After all, there are 393 different species of them that all are quite different from one another. From sulfur-crested cockatoos to bronze-winged parrots, these colorful birds never cease to surprise us with their intelligence and beauty. But have you heard of Pesquet’s parrot, which is more commonly known as the Dracula parrot?

These beautiful birds are easily recognized by their black and grey chests, pitch-black beaks, and strokes of bright red feathers.

Dracula parrots are short-tailed and stretch to nearly 50 cm (20 in) in length. Their weight is around 680–800 g (24–28 oz).

Females and males of this parrot type look quite similar. The only difference between them is that males have red patches behind their ears.

Unlike their other parrot counterparts, these rare birds don’t climb from one branch to another. Instead, they move by jumping.

What’s interesting about these birds is that they are one of 3 parrot species that have featherless faces.

Sadly, these rare animals have become a target for local poachers, which, in addition to increasing habitat loss, has put the Dracula parrots’ population at dangerously low numbers.

If you think you’ve seen it all in the wild, think again. In a jaw-dropping sighting at the Entabeni Game Reserve in the Waterberg, a pride of lions seized a rare opportunity to attack a crocodile basking on land. This incredible encounter was witnessed by 15-year-old student Connor Dawes and his family, leaving even seasoned rangers astonished.

During the colder winter months, cold-blooded reptiles like crocodiles become sluggish due to the drop in temperature. This slows their reaction times, making them vulnerable. “We watched a male lion walk down the dirt road along a dam,” Connor recalls. “He met up with a few youngsters, and they all continued walking. They came to where the crocodile was basking in the sun. Suddenly, the male lion attacked the crocodile.”

    The Video

On paper, a crocodile seems like an unbeatable opponent. A fully grown crocodile can reach up to 7 meters (22.9 feet) in length and weigh up to 1 ton (2,204 pounds). In contrast, a fully grown lion weighs up to 270 kilograms (595 pounds). However, lions are strategic hunters and, when working as a pride, can take down formidable prey.

“I was shocked that a lion would even think of taking on a crocodile,” Connor admits. “The lion grabbed its back leg and pulled it away from the water. The rest of the pride joined in, provoking and attacking the crocodile.” Despite being outnumbered, the crocodile wasn’t going down without a fight. It thrashed and snapped, trying to fend off the lions.

    A Narrow Escape

Eventually, the crocodile managed to break free and retreated to the safety of the water. “I was relieved that we wouldn’t see the lion kill the crocodile,” says Connor. “The crocodile swam away, and the lions moved off and lay down as if nothing had happened.” Remarkably, the crocodile was spotted the next day swimming in the dam, unharmed.
